A Return to Biking / Seven Days of Gratitude

Seven Days of Gratitude · Day 2 : A Return to Biking

When the sun's out, my bike's out. And now, gratefully, I'm not the only one. If you can walk the streets, chances are you'll see a LOT of (new) people on bikes, suddenly in the know about this simple joy. As a mental health professional, I applaud this whenever it's possible. As an avid cyclist, I'm thrilled to see a resurgence in bicycling. Whether it's recreational or competitive, the health benefits are the same. Those benefits are compounded when you bring the whole family along, creating happy memories during a challenging time. With children's sports activities canceled, gyms closed and lockdowns, now more than ever we need movement, and bike riding can be a great new ritual and activity for the family to do together. I'm grateful so many people are rediscovering cycling, and families are now riding together. A bike store owner I know has never been busier, selling and fixing bicycles at a safe social distance. It is my hope that the renewed interest in bike riding continues past the lockdown, and adults of all ages and fitness levels continue to experience both the health benefits as well as the joy so many left behind in their childhood.
