A Rare Depth of Expertise
Dr. Cerfolio’s authority in this space is shaped not only by scholarship and clinical practice, but by direct frontline experience. She served as a first responder providing medical and psychiatric care following 9/11, and worked with victims of trauma during The Second Chechen War and Genocide. These experiences profoundly inform her understanding of terrorism, mass violence, and the individualized nature of psychological recovery.
Through this work, she recognizes that healing from terror and trauma is never one-size-fits-all. Her perspective integrates clinical science with human experience, emphasizing meaning, connection, and long-term restoration.

In addition to her public and media work, Dr. Cerfolio maintains a private practice in Greenwich Village, where she works with adults seeking depth-oriented, solution-focused psychiatric care. She is a board-certified psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she teaches advanced psychotherapy to psychiatry residents.

Her approach emphasizes partnership, safety, and empowerment — helping patients move beyond obstacles toward emotional balance, resilience, and meaningful change.
