4 Surprising Benefits of Regular Exercise
People who know me well or are connected through social media know that exercise is a huge part of my life. For good reason (read on!). For me, regular exercise is a non-negotiable part of my life, and I treat it - and my entire well-being - with the same loving care I do all my patients and career.
Most people associate exercise and its necessity with physical well-being and maintaining a healthy weight. And while that’s true, there’s also great benefit for mental health through exercise. I have many patients who I have encouraged to exercise regularly and change their diet which has reduced their depression, stress, anxiety, as well as alleviate high blood pressure, diabetes and high blood cholesterol.
If one of your goals is health-oriented - greater mental health or to improve physical health in any way, start where you are. The point is, just start. Oftentimes “resolutions” fall away because we set out with impractical thinking. Why not set yourself up for success by exercising in any way for just 10 to 15 minutes a day? Exercise needn’t be a chore. Be kind and patient with yourself and keep it simple, doable and FUN. And remember, exercise is a privilege, not a punishment.
Surprising Benefits of Regular Exercise:
1. Improves your mental health and mood and decrease stress:
Your body releases neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor), and endorphins which helps to alleviate mild depression and anxiety and reduce stress.
2. Keeps your thinking and learning skills sharp as you age:
Exercise stimulates your body to release proteins and other chemicals that act to improve the structure and function of your brain.
3. Strengthens your bones and muscles:
Regular exercise can slow the loss of bone density that may come with age. Doing regular muscle strengthening activities can increase your muscle mass which can better support joint mobility and functioning.
4. Improves your sleep:
Research has shown that regular exercise can help you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
Greater mental health, improved sleep, stay sharp and flexible – yes, please. Who doesn’t want that?
But in addition to all of the above, for me it is an absolute joy to feel my body move and sweat to release toxins and reduce stress and tension from the day. It helps me feel young, activated, motivated and better grounded. It also helps me stay fit and flexible. I love challenging my body to see if it can rise to the occasion. My body usually responds to the challenge, which further motivates me to know that I can do what I set my mind to do.
Get your Mental Health On!
Anyone can find time to exercise 10 or 15 minutes a day, especially if it’s fun. This does not have to be anything classically considered exercise. Stretch in the morning, at lunch time, before you go to bed or during commercials. Designate a day to walk 15 minutes alone or with a friend, or turn on your favorite music and dance while you prepare meals. Or, get creative while you’re watching TV and do some lunges or push-ups or just dance during commercials. The important thing is that you identify something doable, commit and schedule your own well-being appointments with yourself, and enjoy yourself.
